To widen the scope of interaction between Commerce students and the industries, Commerce Department from Raffles Design Institute - Guangzhou arranged a visit to the Guangzhou Yakult Factory at the Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone on June 2nd, 2010. This was a trip aiming to be familiar with the management and operations of such an international renowned dairy company.
The parent company of Guangzhou Yakult is Yakult Co., Ltd., Japan, which has its own Health Act that is widely regarded by consumers. Guangzhou Yakult Co., Ltd was established on 16th January, 2001 as a joint venture between the parent company in Japan, Hong Kong Yakult Co., Ltd., Yakult (China) Investment Co., Ltd. and Guangzhou Jianzhi Investment and Consultant Co., Ltd.. The aggregate amount of investment is 247.5 million RMB. The sprawling factory operates state-of-art equipment running on 2-shifts daily with total staff strength of 100 workers.
Through our close association with Guangzhou Yakult, lecturers from our College will able to plan for a detailed and thorough trip. This allows our Commerce students to learn and experience more within the short duration of the trip.
The trip was divided into 3 stages. At the first stage, a senior staff of Guangzhou Yakult presented an introduction on the company profile, corporate culture, and product knowledge, so as to let our students have a better understanding of the “Yakult” brand. The second part involved a video presentation on the production facilities. Yakult health drinks were generously served and there were also souvenirs giveaways. Management representatives also expressed the hope that our students can be employed by “Yakult Guangzhou” in future. At the last stage of the trip, the group was given a tour of the factory premises. In this part, a senior staff gave a detailed explanation of the production process and also answered our students’ queries. Our students were able to better appreciate the specific mechanics of each part of the production process, thus widen their scope of knowledge apart from what is being taught from textbooks.

This field trip has successfully enhanced the students’ learning, besides the classroom education. Such outdoor practical trips allow our students to visualize and appreciate the concepts of Operations and Quality Management, Marketing as well as International Business Operations. In future, Raffles – Guangzhou will continue to source for and offer more such industry visits to our students, so as to improve their overall knowledge plus international marketing and management skills.
